Literacy
At Castlemilk High School we believe that Literacy is the gateway to the curriculum and are committed to promoting and supporting literacy across the curriculum.
We aim to promote a culture of Reading for enjoyment. We achieve this by:
· Making sure that our school library is well stocked, with a range of literature to suit all abilities and interests.
· Providing opportunities for all pupils to make use of the library. As a result, our library is one of the most used school libraries in the city.
· Providing weekly newspapers for pupils to read at Breakfast Club, in the social area, or in class when appropriate. We have weekly deliveries of First News, the UKs best-selling newspaper for children, and of the Herald, and pupils are encouraged to make use of these resources.
· Offering Library clubs such as the Manga Club at lunchtime on a Thursday and the Creative Writing Club on a Friday (see Mrs Rusk for more details).
· Marking events such as World Book Day with a celebration of literature.
· Establishing links with the community library. The local librarian has shown us how to access free e-books, audio books, magazines and comics. If you are a member of Glasgow Libraries, check out BorrowBox, Libby, Comics Plus and RB Digital on the App Store.
We support our young people in their literacy by:
· Using the Accelerated Reader programme to help them choose books appropriate to their reading levels. This programme also supports the young people to progress their reading levels and to choose books accordingly.
· Using Star Reading Tests and Single World Reading Tests to identify the young people requiring targeted support, which will be provided by the faculty of inclusion and across the school.
