Numeracy at Castlemilk High School
Numeracy is absolutely everything to do with numbers and plays a huge role in pupils’ success, not only in Maths, but across the whole curriculum. At Castlemilk High School we devote a lot of time and energy into highlighting the numeracy skills our pupils are developing, and helping them improve.
In the past year we have updated our Numeracy booklet and created a Numeracy policy. We have also introduced weekly numeracy problems into tutor time. At various points of the year we run Snapshot days where pupils get the opportunity to think and reflect on where they use their Numeracy skills over the course of a day. A major event is also Maths Week Scotland which aims to help build enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards numeracy and maths through various games, challenges, and special events. Some highlights included a hugely successful daily challenge between ourselves and other schools which all of our BGE classes were able to take part in. We also were lucky to have a visit from Police Scotland and try out a speed gun!
This year we are looking forward to developing our Numeracy strategy even further by introducing Numeracy Ambassadors – senior pupils who will assist younger pupils and offer support in class. We will also be developing a series of online resources for pupils to have extra Numeracy help outside the classroom.
Pupils can develop their numeracy skills at home too. We encourage all pupils to practise their numeracy skills for 10 minutes each day by playing Sumdog (www.sumdog.com).
If you want to find out more about any of our Numeracy initiatives or how you can help your child than please just get in touch!
