Money Week 2012

As part of Castlemilk High's development of Financial Education and Numeracy Across the Curriculum all S1 pupils have been taking part in Money Week (21st - 25th May). The aim of the week is to get pupils thinking about how money effects everyday life - receiving, spending and budgeting. As well as a financial theme to maths lessons throughout the week pupils have been involved in 3 events:

On Monday, Money Week was introduced by a guest speaker. Pupils then were given a Personal Finance folder in which they had to try and think back 1 week, looking at how much they had spent and if each purchase was something necessary or not. They then had to use the folder to keep a personal balance sheet for the week. Completed folders showing correct calculations at the end of the week are entered into a prize draw.

On Wednesday, Numeracy in the World of Work saw 11 businesses, such as Royal Bank of Scotland, and trainers come into the school and run activities to show how numeracy skills are used in their field of work.

The week concluded on Friday with the Junior Apprentice. Teams of 10 pupils were given a budget, with money designed by pupils, to buy resources to make into a product to sell for a profit in a lunchtime market place. Pupils had to decide on roles such as accountant, marketing manager, buyer and chief executive.
